Why Can't You Stop Smoking?
By Brian Welsch
They say that the common person attempts to stop smoking five times before they really kick the habit. One has to wonder why this habit is so addictive. After all, if somebody told you to stand over a barrel of smoking leaves and inhale, you'd think they were insane. Yet you light cigarette after cigarette, breathing in smoke and other dangerous chemicals because your head and body crave the feeling. This has to stop and the time to do it is now. If you would like to quit smoking, forget all the commercials advocating the latest quit smoking products and get rid of that pack away right now. Put away all your ashtrays, lighters and make a pact with yourself that you are going to be a non smoker. Once you've done that, you need to brace yourself for what's to come. When you stop smoking, you have to be prepared for a really rough and turbulent ride.
Symptoms
You must be prepared for the symptoms when you stop smoking. Some of the symptoms you could experience include depression, moodiness, anxiety, lack of or an increased appetite, the feeling of grieving as if you just lost a beloved, and more. When you experience these symptoms, you must keep in mind that that's all they are. They are just symptoms of you trying to stop smoking. However, you must work to hold this in mind so that you are not overwhelmed by the symptoms, which could lead you to give up your attempts to stop smoking altogether.
Keep Reminders
To help you out while you are trying to stop smoking, leave reminders around the house. Leave sticky notes on the windows and mirrors around the house, in the bathroom, in your sleeping room, in the kitchen and even on the refrigerator. This is so that whenever you get the urge to smoke, you can look at these reminders of your efforts to stop smoking. The reminders could be arguments why you would like to stop smoking to begin with, they could be reminders from your family members who want you to stop, or they could just be motivational quotes. As long as they remind you of your attempts to quit smoking, they can be effective in getting over those ugly symptoms until they fade.
The most significant thing to remember is that these symptoms will pass away. You will be a non smoker if you stick to your plan to stop smoking. However, you're going to have to refrain from those activities that had you smoking in the past and you even might have to refrain from meeting out with anybody who smokes, at least for a while. Before you know it, you'll be able to look at a cigarette and tell yourself, "I used to do that," because then you'll finally be a non smoker once again.
